He will celebrate a Solemn Mass for First Friday, with a meditation on “The Presentation of Mary in the Temple.” After Mass, there will be the daily Novena prayer and the Novena hymn “Tota pulchra es.”

After the ceremony, Canon Wells will give his “First Blessings” as a newly ordained priest.

After the ceremony, Canon Wells will be available to give his “First Blessings” as a newly ordained priest to anyone who did not receive a blessing the preceding evening.

Coffee, tea, and light breakfast will be offered; bring your favorite treat to share. The morning retreat will be led by a Legionary priest and include a talk, meditation, Exposition, Reconciliation, and Mass.

Her personal testimony is her moving witness to faith and hope after the death of her daughter in the Sandy Hook school shootings. Today’s preacher is Father Richard Cipolla, former pastor of Saint Mary’s Parish (Norwalk). He will celebrate Solemn Mass for the First Sunday of Advent; the homily will be a meditation on “The Visitation.” After Mass, there will be the daily Novena prayer and the Novena hymn “Tota pulchra es.”

Following the ceremony, there will be a coffee hour in the church hall. Our pastor, Canon Altiere, will also be celebrating the name day of his patron saint (Saint Francis Xavier). Feel free to bring snacks to share if you would like, for this potluck reception.

Today’s guest preacher is Father Colin Lomnitzer, parochial vicar at Saint Mary Parish (Ridgefield). He will give a meditation on “The Coronation of Our Lady.”

Today’s Novena is extra special, because the feast itself begins this evening with Vespers! After the Novena sermon, there will be Solemn First Vespers of the feast of the Immaculate Conception, with Gregorian chant and sacred polyphony by Renaissance masters Palestrina and Victoria, then the Novena prayer and the Novena hymn “Tota pulchra es.”

Confessions are available beforehand, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

This year Gaudete Sunday (Rose Sunday) falls on December 17th, the beginning of the Great O Antiphons which are sung nightly at Vespers during the last week of Advent. This final week of Advent forms a special time traditionally known as “Wisdomtide” or “Sapientiatide,” named after the antiphon “O Sapientia – O Wisdom that proceedest forth from the mouth of the Most High,” which is sung on the first day of the O Antiphons.

Join us for Solemn Vespers & Benediction at 6:00 p.m. for this double observance of Gaudete Sunday and O Sapientia. After the ceremony, there will be a festive Advent reception in the church hall, with traditional treats like wassail, mince pies and sugar plums. Try the rector’s almond cake with candied fruit!

Now in its second year running, the Wisdomtide party is now a beloved parish tradition for all ages that enables us to celebrate the joy of the season together, without impinging upon the upcoming celebration of Christmas.
